How a move from Toronto to the UK works

It starts with a survey — in person for a house, by video for a condo — so the quote is based on your actual volume rather than a bedroom count. On packing day our crew wraps and packs everything for ocean transit (export-grade cartons, paper, blankets and custom crates for art, mirrors and the TV) and builds the inventory that customs and your insurer will rely on. The shipment comes to our North York warehouse, where it is loaded into a dedicated 20′ or 40′ container, or consolidated with other UK-bound shipments if you are moving a smaller volume.

The container is drayed to the CPKC Vaughan or CN Brampton rail terminal on our own truck, railed to Montreal or Halifax, and sails to Southampton, Felixstowe or Liverpool. ToR1: how to avoid duty and VAT on your household goods

The UK's Transfer of Residence relief lets you import your personal belongings free of import duty and VAT if you are moving your normal home to the UK. The conditions are straightforward: you have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months, you have owned and used the goods for at least six months, you import them within 12 months of arriving, and you do not sell or lend them within 12 months of import. The relief covers furniture, household items, clothing, personal effects and a private vehicle you have owned and used for six months — not alcohol, tobacco, commercial goods or items bought for the move.

You apply online to HMRC using form ToR1 before the goods ship, and HMRC issues a unique reference number (URN). The destination agent needs that number to clear the shipment; without it, the entry is filed as a standard import and duty and VAT are charged on the declared value. We send you the document list and check the application before you submit it, because a ToR rejected for a missing proof of residence is the single most expensive mistake on a UK move.

What it costs to ship household goods to the UK

Cost is driven by volume, so the survey matters. A one-bedroom apartment in the GTA is usually 12–20 cubic metres and ships as groupage (LCL) or a lightly loaded 20′ container. A three-bedroom house is typically 30–40 cubic metres and fills a 20′ container; larger homes ship in a 40′ or 40′ high-cube. Beyond volume, price is affected by access at both ends (stairs, elevators, distance from the truck), the amount of professional packing and crating, whether you need storage in Toronto or the UK, and the delivery address — a London postcode with parking suspensions costs more to deliver to than a driveway in Surrey.

Our quotes are door to door and itemize what is included: packing and materials, loading, drayage and rail, ocean freight and port charges, UK customs clearance, delivery, unpacking and debris removal. Destination port charges and the UK agent's fees are built in; the only items outside the quote are duty and VAT if ToR is refused, quarantine or inspection fees if customs selects the container, and storage beyond the free period at destination.

Timelines from the GTA to Britain

Ocean transit from Montreal or Halifax to Southampton or Liverpool is nine to fourteen days — the shortest of any overseas destination from Toronto. Around it: two to five days from packing to sailing depending on the rail cut-off, five to ten days at destination for customs clearance, container collection and delivery scheduling. A dedicated container typically arrives at your UK door four to seven weeks after packing day. Groupage shipments wait for the consolidation to fill and add two to four weeks. If your UK home is not ready, our agent holds the shipment in storage and delivers when you are.

What to leave behind, and what to think twice about

Some items are prohibited or restricted on import into the UK: firearms and ammunition without a licence, certain knives, most meat and dairy products, plants and soil, and endangered-species products. Others are simply not worth shipping: North American 110-volt appliances need transformers, mattresses are heavy for their value and UK sizes differ, and furniture built for a Canadian house does not always fit a Victorian terrace. Cars can be shipped under ToR if you have owned them for six months, but must then pass UK registration (DVLA and a NOVA notification) — we walk through the numbers with you before recommending it.
