Container-to-Truck Transloading Services in Toronto

Transloading moves freight from one piece of equipment to another: out of an ocean or rail container, onto a straight truck or 53′ trailer. We run it at our own North York warehouse, minutes from CPKC Vaughan and CN Brampton. Our truck drays the box in, our crews unload and re-palletize, our fleet delivers across the GTA and Southern Ontario, and the empty goes back the same day, which ends the per-diem clock.

The dray, the unload and the delivery all belong to one company, so there are no hand-offs between three vendors and no three invoices to reconcile.

When transloading beats direct container delivery

Direct delivery — the container goes straight from the terminal to the consignee — is the right answer when the receiver has a dock, can unload within the live-unload window, and takes the whole box. Transloading wins in every other case. If the delivery address is a storefront, a construction site or a residence with no dock, the container physically cannot be unloaded there. If the load is split between three customers in Mississauga, Scarborough and Hamilton, a container cannot make three stops economically. If the container is floor-loaded and the receiver only takes pallets, somebody has to palletize — and it should be a crew that does it every day.

The math usually favours transloading once container per-diem, chassis days and detention at the delivery site are counted. A container that sits at a customer's yard for a week waiting to be hand-unloaded costs more than the transload fee, and the consignee still has to find labour. We wrote a longer comparison here: transload vs. cross-dock vs. warehousing.

What happens at our transload dock

The container arrives on our chassis with the seal intact. Our crew checks the seal against the bill of lading, photographs the load as the doors open, and unloads by forklift (palletized freight) or by hand (floor-loaded cartons, bags, tires, furniture). Freight is counted, sorted by consignee or SKU where required, palletized to the receiver's spec, stretch-wrapped and labelled. Damaged or short cargo is documented on the receiving report before anything leaves the dock, so claims are supported by evidence taken the day the box was opened.

Outbound loading is planned around the delivery. Straight trucks with liftgates handle stores, sites and residential deliveries; 53′ trailers take consolidated pallets to distribution centres in Mississauga, Brampton and Milton or onward to Southern Ontario. Time-critical pallets can be cross-docked straight from the container to the outbound truck without touching the racks.

Export transloading: truck to container

The reverse flow is just as common. Southern Ontario manufacturers send palletized product to our warehouse by LTL or their own trucks; we consolidate, build the container load plan, stuff and secure the container, and dray it to CPKC Vaughan or CN Brampton for rail to the port. Loading is done to the ocean carrier's rules — weight distribution, blocking and bracing, and a verified gross mass (VGM) declaration — and we photograph the stuffed container before the seal is applied. Details on the container side of that work are on the container loading & unloading page.

Rail-to-truck transload for Southern Ontario and Toronto

A growing share of our transload toronto volume is rail-originating freight for consignees outside the immediate GTA — London, Kitchener–Waterloo, Guelph, Barrie, Niagara. Draying a container 150 km each way ties up a chassis for a day and often triggers extra chassis and fuel charges. Transloading in North York and delivering on a 53′ trailer or straight truck is faster for the consignee and cheaper for the shipper. It also lets one container feed several regional deliveries in the same day.

FAQ

Transloading: frequently asked questions

What is transloading?
Transloading is moving freight from one mode or piece of equipment to another — typically out of an ocean or rail container and onto a truck. It happens at a dock, not inside the container, and usually includes palletizing and sorting. Our explainer covers it alongside cross-docking: What is cross-docking (and transloading)?
How is transloading different from cross-docking?
Both move freight through a dock without long-term storage. Transloading changes the equipment (container to truck) and often re-palletizes the freight. Cross-docking transfers already-palletized freight from an inbound truck to an outbound truck, usually within hours. We offer both at the same facility.
How long does it take to transload a 40-foot container?
A palletized 40′ container is typically unloaded within one to two hours of docking. A floor-loaded container with 1,500–2,500 cartons takes a lumper crew roughly half a day including palletizing. Empties are returned the same day either way.
Can you deliver transloaded freight the same day?
Yes for GTA addresses when the container docks in the morning and the delivery site can receive that afternoon. Most customers schedule next-day delivery so each drop lands on a confirmed appointment.
Do you charge storage between unloading and delivery?
Staging for a few days while deliveries are scheduled is included in the transload fee. Longer holds move onto our monthly pallet storage rate, which is still far cheaper than container per-diem.
Which container sizes can you transload?
20′, 40′, 40′ high-cube and 45′ dry containers. Reefers can be unloaded on arrival but we do not offer temperature-controlled storage.
