Moving to Panama from Canada, Door to Door from Toronto

Moving to Panama from Canada is a short Caribbean run: the container sails from Montreal or Halifax to Colón at the Atlantic mouth of the canal, minutes of paperwork from Panama City. Metropolitan Logistics runs the whole move from Toronto: our crews pack your home in the GTA, the shipment is loaded at our Toronto warehouse as a dedicated container or shared (LCL) consolidation, and our IAM partner agent at destination handles customs clearance and delivers to your door.

What follows is the practical version: timelines, costs, how customs treats household goods, and what is worth putting in the container.

How a move from Toronto to Panama works

It starts with a survey, in person for a house or by video for a condo, so the quote is based on your actual volume rather than a guess. On packing day our crew wraps and packs everything for ocean transit with export-grade materials, builds custom crates where glass, art or a TV needs one, and creates the line-by-line inventory that customs and your insurer will rely on. The shipment then comes to our Toronto warehouse, where it is loaded into a dedicated 20′ or 40′ container, or consolidated with other shipments on the lane if you are moving a smaller volume.

From there the move runs on the same commercial infrastructure we use every day: our own truck drays the container to the terminal, the ocean leg is booked with the steamship lines, and at destination our IAM partner agent clears customs, collects the container and delivers to your door with unpacking and debris removal included.

Customs: how Panama treats household goods

Panama's headline is the pensionado: retirees settling under the pensionado visa (and certain other residency categories) qualify for a one-time duty exemption on household goods up to a value cap, which makes it one of the friendlier destinations in the region to ship to. Outside the exemption categories, shipments are assessed on value. Your coordinator confirms your visa category and the current cap before the container is planned around it.

Clearance runs against your passport, residency documents and a valued inventory, handled by our partner's customs broker at Colón, with delivery to Panama City the same week in most cases and the interior a day or two beyond.

What it costs to ship household goods to Panama

Cost is driven by volume, which is why the survey comes first. A one-bedroom apartment in the GTA is usually 8–20 cubic metres and ships as groupage (LCL) or a lightly loaded 20′; a three-bedroom house is 30–40 cubic metres and fills a 20′ container; larger homes ship in a 40′. Access at both ends, professional packing, crating and storage all move the price, and the quote itemizes every line: packing and materials, loading, drayage, ocean freight and port charges, destination clearance, delivery and unpacking.

Outside the quote sit only the things no honest mover can fix in advance: duty or tax on goods that do not qualify for concessions, inspection fees if customs selects the container, and storage beyond the free period at destination. Each is named in the quote so nothing arrives as a surprise.

What to leave behind, and what to think twice about

Panama runs on 110–120 volts like Canada, so appliances and electronics ship without a second thought. Apartments in Panama City are modern and elevator access is good; the interior can mean rougher access that is worth flagging at the survey.

  • Pensionado exemption is one-time and capped: plan the shipment around it
  • Good news: Canadian 110 V appliances and electronics work in Panama
  • Think twice: mould-sensitive items for the humid interior
  • Travel with you: documents, valuables, medications

Why families moving to Panama choose Metropolitan Logistics

We are an IAM Core Member with IAMTrusted status, which means the partner agent unpacking your home at destination is vetted and financially accountable, not found on a forum. The shipment is packed by our own crews and loaded in our own Toronto warehouse, where you can see it before it sails. And because we run container logistics commercially every day, the drayage and ocean legs ride the same lanes and carrier relationships we book for exporters, which keeps the price honest.

FAQ

Moving to Panama from Canada: frequently asked questions

How long does it take to ship household goods from Toronto to Panama?
Ocean transit is 2–3 weeks, montreal or halifax to colón. Door to door, a dedicated container typically arrives in 6–9 weeks from packing day, and a groupage (LCL) shipment in 8–12 weeks.
Do I pay duty on my household goods in Panama?
Under the pensionado visa (and certain other residency categories) a one-time exemption covers household goods up to a value cap; outside those categories shipments are assessed on value. Your coordinator confirms the category and cap for your case in the quote.
Do Canadian appliances work in Panama?
Yes — Panama uses 110–120 volts on the Canadian pattern, so your appliances and electronics plug straight in. Ship the kitchen; skip the transformers.
Do you deliver everywhere in Panama?
Yes, through our IAM partner agents: the main cities directly, and other addresses with the extra distance itemized on the quote.
Can you store my things if my home in Panama is not ready?
Yes, on either side: in our Toronto warehouse before sailing, or in our partner agent's storage after clearance, billed by the week or month.
Is my shipment insured?
Transit insurance is offered on the declared inventory value as an option on every quote. We recommend it for any ocean move.
What can I not bring into Panama?
The general rules are in our guide, what you can and can't ship overseas from Canada: dangerous goods such as aerosols and loose lithium batteries never ship, and food, plants and alcohol depend on the destination. Your coordinator reviews the restricted list for Panama with you before packing day.
When should I book a move to Panama?
Four to eight weeks before your target packing date in normal season, and earlier for a summer move. The quote costs nothing and does not commit you, and volumes can be adjusted right up to packing day.
